The Week of November 3rd-7th

IMPORTANT DATES:
November 3rd – November 14th – Book Worm Angel Program (collecting new or gently used fun books for Chicago schools)

Thursday, November 6th - Picture retakes (students should have their original picture in hand)

Friday, November 21st – End of Trimester 1

Thank you so much to all the parents who helped to plan and organize our Halloween Party. It was a great success. In addition, many of you sent in a snack, a treat, or drinks. Thank you so much! The kids enjoyed it all!

The Social Studies committee is looking for two parents who have an education or history background to be involved in the adoption of new Social Studies textbooks. You would have to meet with the committee and provide input choosing our textbook for the coming years. The Social Studies committee will be meeting once every other month for the next two years. Please email mpellin@ccsd66.org if you would be interested in joining the Social Studies committee. Thank you!

Science – Students will look at different stages of an animal's life cycle.

Social Studies – We will begin our study of the Southeast. Please look for the Southeast Map to come home later in the week. There will be a Southeast Map Quiz on Thursday, November 21st. Spelling does count and there is no word bank. Please begin to study the map. This will only help when the quiz arrives.

Spelling – The Unit 10 spelling test will be Friday. The words will go home on Monday. Please have your child review the words for the test. There will be no pretest this week or next week due to the four day week.

Language Arts – We will spend the next few weeks writing Thanksgiving stories from the turkey's point of view. We will then type these stories.

Reading - We will continue working on Making Connections (text to text, text to world, and text to self) and finding the problem/solution while reading, Farmer Schultz's Ducks. The October reading party is scheduled for Friday. Please help your child remember their reading folder this week if they have enough days to make the party.

Math – The class will learn about multiplication and division equations, explore inequalities, and find rules for patterns. We will have the chapter 5 test “next” week. There is a lot to know. Please begin reviewing this with your child.

The Week of October 27th - October 31st

IMPORTANT DATES:
Friday, October 31st – Halloween Parties at 1:30 pm (parade at 1:15)
Tuesday, November 4th – Teacher Institute – No School
Tuesday, November 11th – No School

Students should bring their costumes to school on Friday. They will change into their costume in the afternoon.

Science – Students will look at the process of photosynthesis. In addition, students will learn about plants from seeds and plants from spores. If you happen to have a fern at home, please send a fern leaf in with your child on Wednesday. Also, if you have potatoes at home, please send a potato in with your child on Thursday. If you do not have these items, don't worry about it.

Social Studies – We will spend the next week researching and learning about the Presidential Campaign.

**If your child is going to make the reading party for October, please remind him/her that their folder is due by Friday.**

Spelling – The Unit 9 spelling test will be Friday. The words will go home on Monday. Please have your child review the words for the test. We are skipping Unit 8 which is a review unit.

Language Arts – The chapter 1 test will be Tuesday. We will spend the rest of the week working on Halloween stories.

Reading - Students should have received their TFK back on Friday. Please review this with your child. This will help your child with their next TFK. We will be working on making connections and finding the problem/solution while reading, Marvin and the Great North Woods.

Math – Students will be using their multiplication and division facts while doing algebra (chapter 5). Please continue to review facts at home. This will only help your child.

The Week of October 20th-24th

IMPORTANT DATES:
Wednesday, October 22nd – Early Dismissal at 11:00 am
Friday, October 31st – Halloween Parties at 1:30 pm

Science – The Chapter 1 Science test will be returned to the students on Monday. Please look for that to come home. We will begin our study (chapter 2) of inherited characteristics and how traits are inherited.

Social Studies – The chapter 5 Social Studies test will be Wednesday. Please help your child study for this test. Students should use their book, notes, and bingo board to help them study for the test.

Spelling – The chapter 7 spelling test will be Friday. The words will go home on Monday. Please have your child review the words for the test.

Language Arts – Students will review subject/predicate and simple subject/simple predicate . This is a very hard concept for some. Please review this with your child at home. In addition, students will take a look at run on sentences. The chapter 1 test will be Tuesday, October 28th.

Reading - This week the class will work on some culminating activities to Charlotte's Web. Students will have a chance to act out their favorite scene to the play. Please ask your child about it later in the week. In addition, students will continue to work on character traits and making connections. The last vocabulary quiz will be on Tuesday. Please help your child review for this quiz.

Math – Students are working with multiplication and division. The chapter 4 test will be Friday. A good review would be to have your child work through the extra problems for each lesson throughout the chapter. In addition, you will find an “Extra Practice” page (page 110) and a Review/Test page (page 113) at the end of the chapter. Reviewing these pages will also help.

The Week of October 13th - 17th

IMPORTANT DATES:

I do not have anyone signed up to bring in drinks for the Halloween Party. Can anyone supply drinks? Please let me know if you can help out. Thanks!

Science – The chapter 1 Science test will be Friday. Please help your child review for their test using their book, the notes, and the Bingo Board terms.

Social Studies – We will finish our study of the Northeast (chapter 5) this week. The chapter 5 test will be next week. Please refer to your child's assignment notebook later in the week for the exact date.

The Week of October 6th - 10th

All students in my homeroom need to bring in a plain folder that can hold hole punched paper.

ScienceThe class will learn about vertebrates, invertebrates, and insects this week. The chapter 1 science test will be at the end of “next” week. Please refer to your child's assignment notebook later in the week for the exact date. Please help your child review for this test.

Social StudiesThe students will become familiar with the women's rights movement. In addition, they will learn about abolitionists. Please start reviewing the vocabulary at home. This will only help your child when the test arrives.

Language ArtsWe will begin to look at sentences (chapter 1). Students will learn the difference between statements, questions, commands, and exclamations.

Reading - The class will continue to read the novel, Charlotte's Web. Students will practice their predicting, visualizing, and story mapping. In addition, we will work on character traits. The vocabulary quiz will be Tuesday. Please help your child study for the quiz. A new list of words will go out Wednesday. Please look for this list to come home.
